Photo Finally!

Fun With Photos

Quite a number of people that have visited my exhibitions usually take a card and visit my photography webpage.

I have to admit that, while I am proud of the general format I created, the galleries were a bit thin due to the time constraints of getting it up and running before a show.

There were originally twenty-seven photos in the galleries (not including the ones I use as the backgrounds for my various menus).

So, now that I have some time between shows, I figured I’d beef up the number of photos in there. I’ve taken each of the three galleries, and created sub galleries in each. By the time I am finished I should have at least a hundred and fifty photos, all representing different aspects of what I can do.

Hopefully, this broader spectrum of photos will appeal to more people.

Due to the number of shots, though, it’s going to take a while to complete this project. As of last night, I have finished six of the twenty-one new galleries.

If you fine folks could take a look and provide feedback, I would very much appreciate it.

Again, this is not a fishing expedition. If you like what you see, it would be beneficial to me if you would explain why. The same goes if you find something wrong. Just to let you know, there will be some empty slots in the galleries until I am finished (Actually, Gallery 1 is the only gallery that has been modified at this point).

Constructive criticism is the best tool available for something like this. You can leave me a comment or e-mail me here.

Finally!

The Best of Barking Space list is complete. Special thanks to Dave who took pity on me and sent in a pity vote.

Hai-Kuul? Love? Come On!

Hai-Kuul Christmas Gift

Dave and I have a very practical method of exchanging gifts. We essentially each use the other’s Amazon.ca wishlist to figure out what the person is looking for. We also will also possibly get something extra that may not be on the list.

This past Christmas, I got Dave a DVD off of his wish list and then bought him another one that wasn’t listed, but that I thought he would like.

Dave got me two movies off of my wish list, and then sent me this:

Check it out, yo.

That’s right.

It’s a set of magnetic poetry words specifically for Haiku.

How freakin’ cool is that?*

Dave‘s idea** was for me to do haiku on my refrigerator and then take photos and post the photos of the haiku on my site. The problem with this is that I don’t have a digital camera.

At one point, I thought about using a cookie sheet and then taking a still picture using my webcam. The problem with that idea is that a lot of the requests that come in are too specific to be covered by words found in this magnetic poetry set.

I will try to post a few though.

What is Love?

I was on missbhavens recently. I noticed an article that posed a question about whether love was like a Tribble or a leather jacket. She offered a poll at the end of the article so the reader could voice their own opinion.

Being the rebels that they are, the folks leaving comments offered up their own ideas.

Of course, I needed to list my own idea also, and came up with this…

Love, to me, would be a hammock. It’s holds you up, and wraps around you, and if you mess around too much on the side, you fall out and break your face.

I thought this was funny.

Maybe it’s just me.

Come On!

Of course after I wrote this I mentioned it to Dave

Jorge: Man, I am a genius.
Dave: How so?
J: I came up with a wicked definition for love. [Jorge reads Dave his new definition.]
D: [Laughs a little.]
J: So? What do you think? Do you think it’s funny, or what?
D: I think it’s funny that you proclaim your own genius.
J: Someone has to. But the love thing…It’s good right?
D: [Silence.]
J: Come on!
D: [Silence.]
J: Come onnnnn!
D: Just because you say that, doesn’t make it funnier.
J: Really?
D: No.
J: Come onnnnn!

At this point we started discussing how funny it would be if world leaders used come onnnnn! to resolve conflicts…

[George W. Bush and Osama Bin Laden are on the phone, having a discussion.]
GWB: Osama, ya gotta stop promotin’ terrorism!
OBL: No, infidel. You shall all rot in hell!
GWB: Please?
OBL: No.
GWB: Come on!
OBL: No.
GWB: Come onnnnn!
OBL: Oh…What the heck? Okay!

Wicked.

* – Add that to the fact that my lovely wife bought me a Nintendo Gamecube, and you have yourself a pretty sweet Christmas.
** – Actually, it was Beth and Sarah who found the Haiku set first. Dave was an almost innocent bystander.

Fig-tionary – January 16, 2006

aidea (Requested by s-)

  1. Function: noun – A plan for action whose result is to help someone – Usage: Out of everyone on the island, Dave was the one who came up with the best aidea to deal with Jorge’s broken arm.

Life Lessons

Important Points to Remember

Walking around any busy metropolis allows you to contemplate the deeper meaning of life.  Usually you can create a rule based on this introspection.

Here are seven words that you should think about…

Not everybody looks good in leather pants…

I’m sure it’s a trial and error thing, to know if you look good in leather pants.  But let me tell you, the ratio definitely favours the errors.

I think this is why I need glasses now.

The Weakest Link

The Weakest Link

I don’t normally make New Years resolutions. This is because I never follow through on what I tell people at the beginning of the year.

Getting into better shape is one of those thigns that I tell people that I want to do.

And yet, I never do it.

Which is stupid, really, considering that I am in a Karate dojo that emphasizes physical endurance along with everything else.

And it’s not easy.

Once in a while we will have an intense exercise class, in which we really push ourselves to the limit. It’s more than just aerobic exercise. It’s torture.

But it’s a good kind of torture.

Even though I’ve moved up to Brown Belt level, I still attend the Orange/Green/Blue class on Tuesdays to help out. It’s tucked in between the children’s class I assist in and the Brown Belt class.

When the time is right, exercise classes usually carry on all week in most of the adult classes. For example, yesterday there were two exercise classes in a row. I decided to tough it out and try and do both toe Orange/Green/Blue and the Brown Belt Classes.

How embarassed was I when I was ready to heave at the end at the end of the lower-level class?

Very much so.

I don’t think I will be hearing the end of this.

Considering I’ve been doing martial arts for fourteen years, you’d think that I’d have built up some kind of stamina. Granted, it’s been fourteen years of different martial arts, so different types of endurance. But still…

My problem is an inability to push past a wall. This permeates all athletic activity that I do.

I can’t swim more than one length of a pool without stopping. Running is torturous, as is practically every other exercise.

I’ll approach this wall and the feelings of nausea and fatigue seem to overwhelm me.

I have an athsmatic friend who can run circles around me. He runs 10K races without sweating. He is an inspiration. He also is convinced that I am a wuss because I can’t think past this wall.

And he is right.

With every failed attempt to surpass this barrier, I seem to be losing a little more ground.

Well, no more.

I figured I would write this down here, on my blog, as an incentive to kick some ass.

I have a half marathon that I will be running with Dave next year. I also have a canoe trip coming up where I have to really kick some ass.

I’m not writing this as a fishing expedition so much as an admission of inadequacy. Please don’t bother trying to be complimentary. I really do appreciate it. However, I would much rather have people comment on how they push past their own barriers to improve themselves. This might help me figure out things for myself.

Consider this a life resolution rather than a New Years one.
