Best LOL Within

Best Friend. Worst Influence

I am the king of idiots.

I suppose that should be capitalized…

Make that the King of Idiots, or Ye Olde Kinge of Idiotse.

When I was a child, I had a ridiculously high IQ (or so people tell me).

Then, I discovered beer and I set the record for degradation of IQ score. Consequently, I always end up getting myself into stupid situations because I can’t keep my mouth shut.

My good friends know that I will pretty much do anything if they dare me or make fun of me. Probably a throwback to childhood when people would make fun of me but I couldn’t actually do anything about it.

Here are some examples…

I was visiting Tien a few years ago, and his dad has an awesome sense of humour. His dad also knew that we’re mildly competitive with each other.

We were sitting in their living room and talking about mowing lawns…

Jorge: Is your backyard very big?
Tien’s Dad: Big enough. You know, Tien can cut the grass in fifteen minutes. That’s pretty fast.
Jorge: [Leaning out of his chair and checking out the lawn.] Really?
[Everyone laughs because they know Jorge is wondering if he could cut it faster.]

Here is another instance from a few weeks ago at Tien’s Stag. We were eating at Schwartz’s in Montréal. They have a combo that is essentially gigantic, and I wasn’t sure if I could eat it or not. I asked everyone what they were having…

Jorge: Tien, what are you having?
Tien: Number Six. Schwartz’s Combo.
Jorge: What about you, mano?
Dave: I don’t know. I’m hungry, but I’m not sure if- What the hell. I’ll have number six.
Jorge: I’m not sure if I want that combo. I mean, a nice smoked meat sandwich could hit the spot.
Dave: Well, that’s ok. You can eat what you want. You don’t have to get the number six [Looking down and smirking.].
Jorge: Bastard.

Of course, I ordered the Schwartz’s combo. It was good, but I think I offset the orbit of the Earth after eating that meal.

Fast forward to last week when Dave wrote this entry. He mentioned the National Novel Writing Month contest. Essentially, one has to write a novel in a month (at least 50000 words).

I almost dismissed this until I read this line at the end of the entry…

What do you think? Tell me what to do. And if you’ve got the yarbles, suffer with me.

I am such an idiot.

Of course I agreed to join him. And I actually might only have 3 weeks to do it if my wife and I end up going on vacation at the end of November.

This is like a 200-page Schwartz’s combo.

Let’s hope I can get through it.

ROTK LOL (Skip this if you are not the least bit geeky)

So, nerd that I am, I invited some friends over to watch Lord of the Rings: Return of the King on Saturday afternoon.

These types of events are usually chock full of good food and drinks. Yesterday was no exception.

I got to meet James, which was awesome. I MSN with him every now and then (sounds kinky), and so I know him in that respect. Now I can put a face to the typing, and he’s a pretty cool guy.

He lives just North of my friend Dave (not Dave but the other one), who was also coming down for the movie, but lacks vehicular mobility.

Rather than have Dave taking the not-so-reliable public transit system, I asked James if he could pick Dave up.

That must have been interesting*

[Doorbell rings. Dave opens door.]
James: Hi. I’m looking for Dave.
Dave: That’s me! You must be James.
James Yup! Ready to go?
Dave: Yes I am!
[Dave grabs his coat and his contribution to the potluck and they get in James’ car.]
Dave: So, are you a friend of Jorge’s?
James: Not really. You are, though, right?
Dave: Yeah. Um…Do you know him very well?
James: Not really.
Dave: Am I safe? Or should I jump out of the car now?

They seemed to have hit it off, though, as they weren’t trying to kill each other when I answered the door.

A few more people arrived and we settled in to watch the flick. The movie is longer than four hours, so we made sure to bring all of the food with us into the living room, so as to minimize disruption.

When I watch movies with my good friends, one of two scenarios happen…

  • We watch the movie in rapt silence, enjoying every minute
  • We insert our own funny commentary, enjoying every minute

Dave and I were quiet, but James started off and people started laughing. Once that happened, the floodgates opened and Dave and I set the commentary party ablaze (acutally, everyone had some hilarious lines).

I would have to say the best line was during a scene where Sauron’s Army marches forth from Minas Morgul. The Witch King of Angmar is flying on his fell beast over the canyon, where the road to the Black Gate is packed totally solid.

As the Nazgul flew over the army, Dave said…

Traffic is currently backed up all the way to Minas Morgul!

We all burst out laughing hysterically.

Positivity Needed. Apply Within.

A friend of mine is going through a tough time right now.

I don’t feel comfortable writing about the situation, out of respect for my friend. It’s nothing evil. It’s just a very sad event. If you have any spare positive thoughts/energy/prayers that you can send my way, I’ll pass them on.

If you know who I am talking about, please don’t mention names in the comments.

Due to my hero complex, I feel utterly helpless in situations like this.

Canadian Appreciation Stops Further Wannabe Hate

Canadian Appreciation Week – Favourite Canadian Spacers

This sounds like something that will result in a trip to Home Depot. In reality it is celebrating the Spaces of Canadians.

Now, I am not one to stick to convention, so you shouldn’t be surprised that I will be bending the rules a little on this one.

From what I’ve seen most folks participating in this particular blog project are writing short descriptions of their favourite Canadian Spaces along with links so that the faithful reader can click and enjoy these Spaces themselves.

I’ve actually been doing that for a while with the Blog Tome on the top menu of my blog. There are a fair number of Canadians in that directory, so I don’t feel as if I should really just cut and paste.

Instead, I will post only one link to one Spacer* who I feel is one of the unsung heroes of the MSN Spaces universe…

Absolute InfinityKaren’s space is like going to a nice cottage. It offers a wonderful escape from the everyday, stressful life that a lot of us have. She has a variety of things to read and do on her page if you choose to follow. Karen is a warm and caring person who also tries to visit all the people that visit her. So go give her a visit, and see why I think she’s so great!

But Why Stop There?

Spaces is great, but in a world where we all need to get along, I think some hats need to be tipped to those who are not under the MSN umbrella. Dave and Jay would make almost every list, so I’m going to share some of my other favourite non-MSN bloggers from Canada…

Favourite Non-Spaces Canadian Bloggers

Shaun HattonShaun is the paragon of innocent honesty. You can also replace the word ‘innocent’ with ‘brutal’. Not that this is a bad thing. Hell no. Shaun calls it like he sees it. His blog was created entirely by him. So I guess he would classify as in independent. On top of being a great columnist, he is also a wonderful friend. Go check him out!

VideogameyVideogamey is a hilarious site. Obviously the topic is all about video games, but the repartée is wicked-cool. There is usually a post a day, about various topics. On top of it all, you can make suggestions. Definitely the place to go if you want to get reviews on games by people who are just like you and me. Well, maybe more like me.

Pushing the Envelope Further

While I’m at it, I’ll ditch the Canadian Elitism and move onto our neighbours from the South…

Favourite American Bloggers

I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a WinoThis talented writer hooked me from her comments left on Dave‘s site. She’s got a sharp tongue, and the intelligence to use it properly. She writes about anything and everything that she can get her hands on with enjoyable results. No matter what you read, you will always leave with new thoughts. She is as insightful and wise as she is witty. The people that frequent her comments section also add further enjoyment. Kris’ blog is like an ongoing conversation. Go give her a read!

Three Cats In a One Bedroom ApartmentJulie rocks. Her and her writing team (composed of her three cats) are a force to be reckoned with. She writes about her views of the world, and they can be damned funny. Oh yes, she also has nice calves.

Favourite Wannabe Canadian Blogger

The ShellieIf you are ever fortunate enough to be granted access, you’ll enjoy Shellie’s view of the world. She logs her days in this Space, and always has a positive spin on things. Go check her out, if you’re allowed.

I Am a Horrible Person

For obvious reasons (space restriction, human frailty, IQ of 7, etc.) I will have forgotten some people from here. This is by no means an indication that I don’t read your work, or hate you. In fact, you are probably in the Blog Tome, and most likely have been there for quite some time.

If you are not in the Blog Tome, and feel you should be, please drop me a line at barkingspace@rogers.com, and I will add you. I am human, after all.

Well, mostly…

Thanksgiving Ringing Canadian

Thanksgiving Wedding Bells Ringing

The weekend was spent in the Ottawa area, celebrating the union of Tien and Natalie Wong.

I won’t get into too much detail, unless the bride and groom want me to.

I will say, though, that it was a beautiful wedding, and I believe everyone really enjoyed themselves.

I am very happy for them both.

I am also convinced that more food was consumed this past weekend than was consumed in Montréal. Mind you, there were more people at the wedding…

Canadian Appreciation Week – My Favourite Canadian Place

My favourite place in Canada is probably not going to be too much of a shock to most of you. Actually, to some, it will be a cause to roll eyes.

Algonquin Park is a place that just struck a chord in my soul at the end of the last decade.

No year is complete without at least one visit to this magical park.

I first went to Algonquin Park after university. The weather was crappy for the first few days, but even amidst the downpour, the park’s beauty was unquestionable. It was the end of August, and the leaves had already started turning (early, really). It smelled like nature, rather than pollution.

It was a feast for the senses.

Since that time, I’ve gone back at least a few times a year. I can never get enough of it.

It has great fishing, and camping.

Most of my nature photos are taken in Algonquin Park. Whether in the interior or along one of the Highway 60 Corridor Trails, the scenery is breathtaking.

Algonquin Park has places to camp all year long.

You should definitely check it out. These two sites are well-run and have lots of information…

I’m sort of at a loss to write about The Gonk. It’s like trying to explain why you like your favourite food. If anyone has questions about it, I’ll answer them by updating this entry.

Bubu Lost

Good Luck to Bubu

My friend Christian is grading for his Nidan in kobudo this weekend (why does that sound perverted?).

Christian is affectionately called Bubu by his girlfriend and her friends.

What does it mean?

Who knows?

Either way, Bubu the Warrior sounds kinda funny, don’t you think?

Good luck, Mugen!

Lost…In Translation?

I regularly watch House M.D.. In my opinion, it’s one of the best shows on television. Indeed, it is my favourite non-animated television show of all time.

Lost is also something that I watch, but only because I want to see how it ends. I don’t enjoy it as much as House M.D., not by a long shot. I do, however, enjoy the days of speculation before and after each episode…

  • Will Locke say the word Boon any less than twenty times every episode?
  • Will Jack and Kate kiss?
  • Will Walt us his mind powers to send beams of superheated plasma into Shannon’s pouty face so that she stops whining?
  • Does JJ Abrams actually have a plan?

I’m curious what you all think of this series?

Do you think that the season is planned out carefully in advance? Or do you think that it’s a day-by-day thing?

Staggy Profiles are La Belle Walkabout. La Obsessions are Big in Treetops and Wind Down (Debutchery Day 2)

Tien’s Stag or The Weekend of Debutchery in Montréal (Day 2)

Day 1 was interesting (Make sure you read about it here before you continue).

We set the tone by eating far too much, in too small of a time frame and got to bed in the wee hours of Saturday morning after a marathon walk.

When we awoke, Tien chatted with Steve and we agreed to meet at HMV before heading out for a healthy breakfast.

On our way there, I called Dave to see how he was doing. We had text messaged each other a couple of times, and even though I knew he was having a weekend of vegging out, I thought I would ask if he wanted to come out with us for dinner.

Surprisingly he agreed. He said he would call later on in the day to square things up.

Character Profile

Name: Steve
Height: Not so Short
Eating Prowess: Steve’s claim to fame is not volume, but his willingness to try anything new at least once.
Trip Highlight: Getting two free snowboards.

La Belle Province

After meeting up with Steve at HMV, we headed over to La Belle Province (or LBP for the hipper crowd).

It’s a simple little very greasy spoon downtown. Our healthy meal was actually anything but.

We stood in line, where Tien and I had this brief conversation…

Tien: What are you having?
Jorge: I’m not sure. I might just have poutine.
T: That’s it?
J: Yeah, why, what are you getting?
T: The burger and poutine combo.
J: Well, I guess the poutine containers are not that big…

Why do I always have to open my big mouth?

The burger that I received was pretty much the same size as the one depicted on the menu picture. The poutine was three times larger.

I was going to cry.

I ate most of it anyway. I could feel my stomach expanding.

Character Profile

Name: Dan
Profession: Dentist and Street Climbing Free Runner
Eating Prowess: Dan can eat a lot very quickly. He once ate 4-5 pieces of KFC in 2 minutes.
Trip Highlight: White tuna. Stepping in cat poop and never realizing it.

Walkabout

After LBP we went shopping.

I needed new cologne (my current bottle had a teaspoon left, and that teaspoon could have easily given everyone in Ontario headaches if I sprayed it on myself) and Dan was looking for one of those video game controllers that plug into your television so you can play video game classics like Pac Man or Donkey Kong. He was looking for the original vector-graphics Star Wars.

We covered quite a bit of ground (nowhere near as much as the night before).

I ended up getting my cologne from Tommy Hilfiger. Dan never found his video game controller for a reasonable price, unfortunately.

We ended up in an underground mall for a pit stop. In the bathroom they had a hand dryer that was so powerful that it deformed your skin from the pressure.

Everyone that needed to go, went.

While Dan was in the bathroom, we all chatted…

Steve: I bet you when Dan comes out of the bathroom he’s going to say he’s hungry.
Tien: [Laughs.]
Jorge: Really?
Steve: I’d bet on it.
[A few minutes pass by, and Dan walks into view.]
Dan: I think I might need to grab something from the food court before we go on.
[Everyone laughs.]
Steve: Told ya.

Character Profile
Name: Lisa
Profession: Keeper of Steve
Eating Prowess: Not so much about sushi. More about chicken.
Trip Highlight: Casino

La Crémière

We stopped at La Crémière for some interesting treats…

Dan introduced us (me, at least) to soft ice cream on top of a flavoured slush drink.

I ended up getting a blue raspberry slush drink with vanilla soft ice cream on the top, just like Dan.

Everyone else had a different flavour.

It was very interesting. They tasted like Creamsicles.

If you get the chance to try it, I highly recommend this dessert.

Character Profile

Name: Jorge
Profession: The Barking Space Guy, Photographer
Eating Prowess: Eats far too many carbs for his own good.
Trip Highlight: Held his own at Kanda against the experts.

Obsessions

After our dessert break, we wandered up St. Laurent for some more window Shopping. Dave was due to arrive in a few hours, so we had some time to kill.

I bought Dave a rice-picker hat (as he loves Raiden from Mortal Kombat so much) at a small shop. I figured it would be a great gag-gift for his birthday.

We headed up the street to Obsession (A Skate/Snowboard shop)…

Tien was thinking about getting a new snowboard, as was Dan, so they spent some time browsing. There was a two-for-one sale on so they could get a pretty sweet deal on some nice equipment.

After a relatively short time frame, Tien and Dan were the proud new owners of some nice Option snowboards just in time for…fall…

Since Dave wasn’t due for another forty-five minutes, we decided to go back to Steve & Lisa’s room at the Delta.

Lisa was on her own for the day, having some me time, so the room was empty when we got there. Tien and Dan left the snowboards with Steve, as the Options would not fit in Dan’s Lexus.

Tien figured that this was his only reckless act for the whole trip. Apparently creating major gastric distress is not reckless enough to rate.

Character Profile

Name: Dave
Profession: Touches You Last
Eating Prowess: Has eaten some of the most disgusting looking things ever. Once ate Beef Stroganoff that looked like vomit.
Trip Highlight: Ordered a Schwartz’s Combo. Lived to tell the tale.

I See Your Schwartz is as Big as Mine

The walk from the Hotel to Schwartz’s was pretty quick. Schwartz’s a simple little very greasy spoon downtown with a great reputation.

Dave walked up a few minutes after we got into the queue to be served (Schwartz’s is very popular, and usually has a lineup outside)…

It wasn’t too long before we were ushered inside.

Schwartz’s is like a big kitchen packed with tables and the smell of smoked meat. They serve amazing food and people from all over the world make sure to visit when they are in town.

It’s an institution.

Most of our group had been there before and knew what they wanted before we even sat down.

Dave and I mulled over the menu…

Jorge: Tien, what are you having?
Tien: Number Six. Schwartz’s Combo.
Jorge: What about you, mano?
Dave: I don’t know. I’m hungry, but I’m not sure if- What the hell. I’ll have number six.
Jorge: I’m not sure if I want that combo. I mean, a nice smoked meat sandwich could hit the spot.
Dave: Well, that’s ok. You can eat what you want. You don’t have to get the number six [Looking down and smirking.].
Jorge: Bastard.

When the waiter came around, I ended up ordering a Schwartz’s Combo (which consists of a steak, a pile of smoked meat, cole slaw, a pickle, a plate of fries, two pieces of hot dog and a soft drink).

A normal person would have learned their lesson after the triple-sized poutine from the morning. But no! Not me!

The food and soft drinks arrived. A good number of us didn’t want to dirty the glasses we were given and drank straight from the can. We all passed our glasses to Dave (who was on the end of the table next to the only aisle in the restaurant) and he piled them up close to the edge of the table…

Dave: There.
Jorge: That’s awfully close to the edge.
Tien: Be careful, Dave.
Dave: I could totally see me doing something like this: [Pretends to knock glasses off the table and soundly smacks a waiter.]
Waiter: [Startled. Smiles in amusement upon recovery]
Dave: [Looking embarassed.] I’m so sorry!
Waiter: [Still smiling.] You must be one of those ninja turtles.
[Everyone laughs, even though that made no sense.]

That was hilarious. What was even funnier was later on, when Dave hit the exact same waiter (almost bagged him, actually) while goofing around again.

Before we left, we ordered a 5 lb brisket to bring home.

Rockaberry In the Treetop

We tried our luck at Rockaberry again…

This time we found seats and there were desserts left over.

I had one of the tastiest cheesecakes I’ve ever had in my life. Everyone seemed to enjoy their dessert.

We had a great time laughing and talking about the cool dance stylings of Napoleon Dynamite.

Winding Down

Dave went back to Ottawa and Steve went back to his hotel.

The rest of us rented Napoleon Dynamite (as Tien had not seen it) and watched it back at Sanny’s place, laughing at the awesome dance at the end.

We ended up going to bed earlier than the night before as Dan and I were aiming to leave at 06:00 on the Sunday Morning.

It was a great weekend. I’m really glad I went. It was good to get to know some of the folks there better. It was also nice to visit Montreal and eat some amazing food.

I don’t know if I am as driven as Tien to experience it as often as I can, but I wouldn’t say no if the opportunity was handy.

Thanks for the invite, Tien!
