I Caved

Adrian tagged me with a challenge. Namely, list five reasons why I blog.

As most of you know, I don’t particularly care for lists. But since Adrian is a friend of mine, I figured I would rise to the challenge.

So, why do I blog?

It’s hard to put something like this into words, but I’ll give it a shot. Certainly my reasons may be different from when I first started, so for a list of five reasons as of this very moment…

1 – Amusement

I quite enjoy writing. It’s a lot of fun. Some of my friends say that I’m funny. And some of the things that occur in everyday life are just too good to keep to myself. Sharing them here makes me laugh even more sometimes.

2 – Challenge

Every once in a while, I will tell Dave a story about either something that happened to me, or something that I saw. He usually asks if I will blog about it, and I profess uncertainty. It is at this point that the challenge is issued: Can Jorge write a story and get the same reaction from the audience that he did when he used the spoken word? I’m pretty stubborn. Backing down from a challenge is usually not the way to go for me. So I hit the keys and see if I can do it.

3 – Information Dissemination

I like keeping my friends in the loop. At the same time, I’m not really a brag letter kinda guy. Important events and such that take place are usually relayed here in some form or another. Due to certain aspects of my life which I like to keep away from the public eye, some of these events are in code. You have to be in the club to understand.

4 – No Good Reason

Just because. Moving on…

5 – People

I enjoy attention. I like to make people laugh. I like to make people happy. At times, I find it helpful when I can make people understand how I feel by using my words and making them feel the same way. Without people, this would just be a diary. And if it was that, I’d just use a little notebook. I love comments. I love the interaction.

Now, it’s Your Turn

In true tagging form, I will ask the following people to answer the call. What are five of your reasons for blogging?

With Great Power…

…Comes Great Blogsponsibility*

There are an awful lot of blogs out there. There are also a lot of awful blogs.

I’m sure the idea of blogging started out as something serious, but like anything given to the masses they have become something different altogether.

I use my blog as a way to relay information to friends and family, in a (hopefully) entertaining way.

While the blog is a personal one, I try not to make it too personal.

Above all else, I try to maintain my honesty, writing truthfully from my point of view. I have a number of great friends who will inform me if I have bent the truth too far**.

Certainly I bend the truth sometimes. But never more than a step or two off the path. Usually it is in the recanting of a story that I don’t remember verbatim. Things can happen when I am not near a computer***, and trying to recall the stories later can be challenging, especially when it has been a long time.

I can say one thing for sure (and my friends can back this up): My blogging personality is the same as my normal one. What you read is what you get.

Since I started blogging, I’ve met a number of bloggers. For the most part, I have been pretty lucky in the sense that some of these people are what I expected them to be.

However, there are some bloggers who have distinct personas for their blogging selves that differ quite radically from their real-life counterparts.

Equilibrium must always be maintained, it seems.

What do you think about this? Have your findings been similar to my own?

* – Oh yes. I invent words. Don’t mess with me.
** – This was the most complicated shout-out ever. I probably missed some people. I apologize, but you can understand that I can only use so many words in a sentence.
*** – Who knew?

The Boy Scout Motto

Be Prepared

Having children seems to be a very complicated thing.

Back in the days of the cave-people, I suspect that Oog and Aag had to go out into the forest to make sure they had enough palm fronds and rocks to use as diapers and toys for their hairy bundle of nerves with a prominent brow.

And so here we, in modern times, must do the same thing, albeit more so.

Cloth diapers or disposable? Change table? Light saber or blaster?

So many decisions.

So, being the forward-thinking guy that I am, I started a list of stuff that we will need so that I don’t forget anything.

Things like…

  • Crib
  • Stroller
  • Car seat
  • A steady stream of WhyNattes
  • Diapers
  • Receiving Blankets*
  • Sleepers
  • Baby poncho, sunglasses and cowboy hat

I’m not going to write the whole thing here, as it would take too long and most likely overload the internets.

So, good people (especially parents), I need some advice.

What would you put on the list?

Go bananas…

* – Is it just me, or does this sound like something for a football player.

Lemme ‘Splain. No. Too Long. Lemme Summup.

The Year in Review

I suppose that at some point before the calendar page turns each of us should look back and take stock of what has transpired over the last twelve months. It’s not always an easy thing to do. Most things that we don’t need to do are difficult.

Some of us human beings are preoccupied with keeping score. Trying to make sure that we come out on top.

Interestingly enough, if we want to come out on top, we always will. We always have the option of eclipsing the bad with the good if we like. Of course, this can also work in reverse.

There are those among us who never deal with the negative things that they have done (especially to others). These people coast through life wreaking havoc, never stopping to clean up the messes that they leave.

I think it takes more strength to look back on the bad things and see what benefit you can gain from something that possibly took a chunk out of you.

I had originally written a long post about my trials and tribulations this year. After reading it for the nth time, I came to the decision to delete it.

It sounded too whiny. Too negative. The whole point was to try and find the positives in the bad things that happened. But there weren’t enough solutions.

So I’m going to keep it to myself. My own list of things to work on. Inevitably I can see a lot of you trying to put forth pep-talks and such. But I don’t really need those. What I need to do is take care of my own list by myself (maybe with a little help from my friends).

So in place of my giant article, I offer up this vague list to sum up my year…

  • Exercise disappointment
  • 24-Hour Movie Marathon goodness
  • Unspeakable loss
  • Great times with friends
  • Visiting our treasure in the South
  • A pleasant surprise
  • Unreasonable fears
  • Energy renewed
  • Another loss
  • A visit from our treasure from the South
  • A house
  • Hitting my wall for the first time in a long time
  • Coming up with a plan to overcome the wall
  • Making a new, very great friend
  • Counting myself lucky to have solid friendships

Trust me, you would have fallen asleep at the original post.

Tripping

The Longest Trip

I think it’s a crime to tell someone to forget the past.

I’ve heard plenty of people tell other people to leave the past behind them. They say not to dwell on things that have happened.

I disagree.

While it’s not healthy to obsess about the negative things that have happened to us in our lives, it is certainly important to note that these incidents helped shape who we are.

A friend of mine is having some problems letting go of an issue. I told her that it’s okay to think about it, but to make it the sole purpose of her life may be stretching it a bit.

Some of her friends tell her to forget what’s troubling her. They ask her to bury it, so that it may never resurface.

In my opinion, it’s always good to deal with it in a constructive way, and move on. It will always be there in your mind. But if you choose to acknowledge your past, you will have a much easier time moving on with life.

On any trip, it’s always wise to carry at least a little baggage.
