Measuring Progress with Pablum

The Watcher Watches

I’ve never really had ridiculous goals.

I’m simple that way.

I just want to be a good father, a good husband, and a good friend. It doesn’t sound like much, does it?

It can be a challenge, though.

Luckily I’ve been blessed with people that make all of those goals easy to attain.

I also find it great when other people want to set goals for themselves. I stand behind them (so long as the goals will never end up harming anyone).

I have to admit, though, that I can’t get enough of watching Little J hit all of these goals that she’s never really committed to.

It’s somewhat inspiring, to tell you the truth.

The fact that this little squirt can achieve so much in so little time is amazing. It’s amazing that all babies do this.

She’ll try to do something, and if she fails she gets pissed off. Be that as it may, she still won’t give up, and she’ll keep pushing and pushing until she reaches her goal, even though she’s not sure what it is.

Sort of puts things into perspective.

  1. Well, you had that goal about fighting in the Kumite. That one was pretty ridiculous.

  2. Over the long weekend, roomfuls of adults would drop everything to listen to my sister’s son gurgle and sigh, and make happy vocalizations. We ignored hockey games, meals, political arguments, games, and each other to smile every time he emmited a new sound. Kids are kind of cute at that age, aren’t they?

  3. Man oh man! That’s just the beginning. Someone once told me, and I believe it to be true, that the infant’s basic personality already starts to show through at that age. What you see in your daughter’s determination right now is probably one of her traits.

Also remember that they are little idiot savants. Things you think a child could never figure out they can figure out. And in the same breath they can do something so stupid that you would swear nothing in the world could be that stupid. All part and parcel of the joys and tribulations of parenthood.

Unfortunately I never could find the reference manual for my kids. Must have misplaced them early on ….

  4. And then you get to toil for twenty or so years, and do it again when you have grandchildren. Thank God!

  5. It’s funny because it seems miraculous that little people become big people so successfully, but at the same time, it’s the most common thing in the world, isn’t it?
