The Big Picture

Cart Calls Kettle Black

I was out shopping at the local Loblaws earlier this evening. I deposited my groceries in the trunk of my car and then rode the shopping cart back to the cart deposit area. I’m not sure if any of you have ever done this, but it involves a steady grip on the bar while “skateboarding” the shopping cart and then hunching over and placing both of your feet on the supporting structure over the rear wheels.

It’s fun.

As I was doing this, I saw a guy get out of his car. He was a TTC driver that I had seen before, driving a local bus; I recall him having a good sense of humour. As I walked back from putting away my cart, he commented, “I can’t believe I just saw a grown-ass man do that.” He chuckled.

I laughed, and motioned around the parking lot (there were a whole bunch of carts lying around), “At least I put my cart away.”

He nodded. “That’s true. I’ll give you that. “

As I drove away, I saw him, skateboarding his own shopping cart towards the front doors of the supermarket. As I honked my horn and gave him the thumbs up, he pumped a fist in the air and had a shit-eating grin.

Grown-ass man indeed.

Bin There Done That? I Don’t Think So!

Bin Lauding

The raccoons have been terrorizing the neighbourhood recently. With such a mild winter, they have been out tearing open the “wildlife-proof” Green Bins, strewing food waste all over the place after they have eaten their fill. On top of that, our back yard kind of looks like a war zone.

After removing the asphalt from our side yard, we were left with a gravelly mess. Our garbage, recycling, and food waste bins all sat along the fence, across from our side door, a necessary eyesore as we had no where else to put them.

Has Bin

A house down the road has a nicely constructed cedar garden shed. I have seen similar enclosures before in my meanderings about town. The company that makes them is called Bin Solutions. Not only do they make large sheds; they make custom enclosures for all of your waste bins!

Looks great on the ouside; spacious on the inside!

They are having an awesome sale right now, so I cashed in. I ordered myself the extra large enclosure in kit form (DIY), and the ordering process was easy. We scheduled a time; they bettered the delivery date; there was a glitch at the processing centre, so they delivered it and put it together for free. That’s what I call awesome customer service!

They asked if I wanted this tag on there. Hellz yeah!

If anyone is looking for a solution similar to the one that we got for our yard (that is both functional and looks awesome), I highly recommend you look these folks up. I’m not getting anything for this endorsement, for the record. They were extra nice to me, so I figured I would give back! Sale ends April 30th.

Cropping

The Culling

The internet is a great place. People who use it can be unbelievably supportive; perhaps too supportive.

Posting my work onto Facebook seemed like a good idea, but I quickly learned that it wasn’t really beneficial to me. There was the whole issue of ownership of images, for one. There was also the issue of the lack of truly beneficial feedback to my work.

This is going to sound horrible, but sometimes generic compliments don’t really help one grow. That is a great photo, is something you see a lot (not just for me, in case you are about to pop my seemingly inflated ego with that pin in your left hand), but how much does a compliment like that really help?

  • Why is the image good?
  • Is there something that the photographer could have done better?
  • Is there something in particular that speaks to you? Something that you would like to share?

After I pulled my “professional” photos from Facebook, I started working harder on populating my photography blog. Quite a number of images went up, all with their own stories and documentation about what settings I used.

And then I stopped, for various reasons.

When I recently started up again, I thought I would regret the hiatus; however I am really glad that I had that break. Being away for a while has given me a fresh perspective, and to that end I have been going through my portfolio and getting rid of images that may only be there because of a newbie’s enthusiasm: the fire of excitement stoked by compliments from very nice people.

To date I have removed about 40 images, with more in the queue for evaluation. I suspect that the portfolio will probably lose about 10 to 20% of its content, and this is just fine with me.

As a friend told me, you want to show people the best of your best work. I completely agree.

It is my sincerest hope that none of you that read this piece are offended in any way. You all help me by keeping me excited about the art that I like to pursue in my spare time. I truly do appreciate kind words you all spare. I just feel that, despite all the kind words, I can be a better photographer. Hopefully this isn’t all bluster and that I can blow you all away with even better images in the future.
