One Three Ton Challenge

Getting Our Feet Wet

Earlier this year, our basement gave us a wonderful present in the form of several litres of water which took up residence in our carpet.

While generous of our basement to do this, we really don’t like that sort of gift. Unfortunately, there was no gift receipt, so we had to get rid of the water using a friend’s dehumdifier and a bunch of fans.

We determined that the problem was because of the weirdo-thaw we had at the time, and matters weren’t helped by the strange layout of the asphalt in our backyard.

It sloped towards the house, and ended at the gate to the front of the house, due to some previous owner paving on top of the asphalt that was already there, causing a lip to form, which acts as a dam.

So Mrs. J and I decided to landscape…

Don’t Like It? JunkIt!

Over the summer, I took time here and there to wield a sledgehammer against the forces of asphalt, cracking it and prying it up in large chunks.

Since there was so much of it – and since it’s not environmentally friendly to dump it – I asked around my circle about disposal companies.

Since Mrs. J and Little J were heading out to Mrs. J’s Grandpa’s cottage over the long weekend, I called JunkIt to rent a five-cubic-yard bin for hauling concrete and stone.

I figured that it would be a good time for me to take care of the asphalt on my own. It was much cheaper than getting other people to do it. It would also be great exercise.

Hauling Ash

So that’s how I spent the majority of my long weekend.

I discovered that the “rugged” plastic wheelbarrow was beginning to crack under the strain of the rubble I was filling it with, so I moved the pile one shovelful at a time.

It certainly was time consuming, but now the section of backyard beside the house is now asphalt-free!

And was it a good workout?

Hell yeah! Everything is so much lighter after you move around heavy debris!

Next year we will be making a nice path and a garden along the side of the house, along with an enclosure for the garbage/recycling bins. Perhaps even a nice sandbox for Little J.

Mrs. J was kind enough to snap these photos of the result of my weekend Labour (go figure it was Labour Day weekend)…

A job well done…

UPDATE: One of the fine folks from Junk It just left a comment informing us that the capacity of this bin is much higher than I thought. Awesome.

Fabulous Scrabble

Nerdism

I’m a self-proclaimed nerd.

But when it comes to Scrabble, I am in an area that far surpasses the common nerd. Something about the game just gets my mind working in overdrive.

I really don’t get to play that often. The games that you find for computers are either too easy, or too difficult to be believable (the computer spells seven letter words every turn). It becomes boring or tiresome.

As with most things, human competition is best. There is a great deal of variablilty between players. Not to mention it is a lot more fun to trash talk each other.

With the computer, you usually have a good idea within a few moves whether you will win or lose the game. But with people, you have no idea.

When Facebook implemented the Scrabulous application I was pretty happy.

The ability to play extended turn-based games of Scrabble with multiple opponents was a very exciting prospect, so I wasted no time in installing it. I don’t normally like installing applications into my profile, but this was a huge exception.

Someone asked me why I like the game so much, and it occurred to me that the philosophy of playing the game is a lot like life…

You make the most with what you’ve got.

Friday Night Madness

Things I Didn’t Expect to be Doing on Friday Night

Breaking pine boards with my head.

So much fun!

AFK

Escape

Recently, Mrs. J and I left Little J with a babysitter so that we might enjoy some time away from the daily routine.

It was an interesting mix of relief and guilt all rolled up into one package.

To our credit, we only phoned once to check in. It was more for the babysitter than anything, as Little J can be quite the fusspot in the evening hours.

In another sappy moment, I realized that I had several photos and movies of the tyke on our digital camera, so in true softie fashion I plugged the camera into the TV and had a little slideshow time.

Adult in Training

It’s amazing how much of one’s life a child truly commands. I certainly anticipated my life changing when we had the little one, but I never realized how different it was until this weekend.

And it is a good thing to spend time away once in a while. If not for your own sanity, then definitely to strengthen the family bond.

I know in my heart that I will not be able to hold onto Little J forever. One day, far in the future, she will separate from us to live her own life. The strange part is that I am preparing her to do that.

Someone once said that the best leaders are the ones who train their followers to replace them or surpass them.

And that is what we do as parents. We try our best to enable our children to do the one thing we fear the most – lose their dependency on us.

Hard Times

Quests

I think this is the most schedule-challenged time of my life. This is including University, where I was actually taking two courses that overlapped by half an hour.

It’s also one of the most physically demanding things I will ever do.

What about the rest of you?

What have been your busiest times/hardest tasks? I’m interested. It’s nice to know that I could be in great company.
