A New Chapter

It has been an emotional summer. I don’t really need to get into that here – but one of the happiest events occurred yesterday: Olivia is starting her new chapter and we are so very proud of her.

Making her new place her own.

I have been thinking about this for a while – and I have been looking at it through many lenses. As always, I felt the need to “put pen to paper”. Read on, if you like!

First of all, to me, Olivia being in University is not a surprise. She is, as they say, a smart cookie, so this is the next step in her evolution towards whatever life she will carve out for herself. As in photography, capturing great images is reliant on two things: luck, and the ability to take advantage of that luck – Olivia has that ability: to take what is in front of her and maximize the opportunity.

It is most likely that Olivia would not admit to you that she is exceedingly intelligent, thoughtful, centered and kind. She would probably distract you with some silly phrase, and then tell you that she is where she is due to her family and friends. She always expresses gratitude for things that people help her with (whether she needed the help or not) and she is very gracious, ensuring that others know who helped her with what. They say it takes a village – and she is very aware and thankful because it shows in her actions.

It was bittersweet to help her move into her new place – while it will only be her home for the next eight months, it’s a formative moment that she has been patiently awaiting for quite some time – a place to call her own.

I *might* be a little proud of this gal.

Our home feels a little emptier with out her here – we miss her tremendously. However, we are excited to see her path as she forges forward through this new part of her narrative.

Indeed, it’s not just us here at home that are proud of her. Her family (biological) and her “family” of friends (acquired through her previous adventures) are all rooting for her and wish her the best. “Good luck” is a phrase that brings me comfort, because I’m sure she can take that and turn it into great things.

One of her mugs sums up her essence quite nicely.

We love you, Olivia!
