Movember 2021

Hi folks! Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

Even with the roller coaster that has been the pandemic, we still have a lot to be thankful for – I know that I do! A wonderful family, great friends, an awesome place to work, and so many other things – which is why I take the time every year to raise awareness and funding for Movember.

The Movember foundation focuses on awareness in three areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mens’ mental health (which includes suicide prevention).

This is my 13th year raising money for Movember, and while the steam behind the novelty of the fundraiser has diminished for most, I stick with it because I believe in the cause. Indeed, every year (especially the last two) have shown that many people are in dire need of help – whether it’s support for cancer, or the willingness for the masses to understand that even the strongest of us need a friendly ear and a shoulder from time to time.

A growing number of men – around 10.8M globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides.

Movember’s goal is to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25% (by 2030). Since 2003, they have funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world (and this is the 2017 number) and have been shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way that health services reach and support men. They exist to help men live happier, healthier and longer lives.

Certainly, not everything associated with masculinity is positive. To be honest, that’s what makes it so difficult for many men to admit that they need help. Why not help me help the Movember Foundation make a difference in assisting those that feel stigmatized (and also, of course, those who muster their courage to reach out for assistance)?

Donations are appreciated – but so are positive vibes!

Thanks for reading! Come November 1 (at 12:01 AM), I’ll be clean shaven and ready to grow the trucker moustache once more (I’m old school – what can I say?) – what will you do?
